Welcome to Literacy Services of Indian River County (LSIRC), where we are committed to providing quality literacy tutoring to local adults so that they and their family can become more contributing members of the community through improved literacy skills. Our vision is to end generational illiteracy throughout our county.
It is estimated that 1 in 5 adults in Indian River County struggle with completing a job application, reading a newspaper, reading to their children or helping them with schoolwork. We focus our mission on adult literacy because the most important indicator of a child’s academic success is the literacy skills of the child’s caregiver. Learning to read starts before birth – via the skills, language, vocabulary and knowledge of the parents. To effectively address the literacy crisis in our school systems, the literacy skills of parents must first be improved.
Formed in 1971, we are a non-profit (501(c)(3) organization and a proud United Way agency partner. Our volunteer tutors provide free, confidential and one-to-one tutoring to individuals aged 16 and older or within group settings at the request of local employers. We also provide family literacy tutoring upon request. More than 20% of our students are senior citizens. We are supported solely by individuals, businesses, foundations and the United Way. LSIRC receives no government funding.
