Tutor FAQ

Is it normal to be nervous about becoming a tutor?

Please know we have all felt the same way that you do at one time or another. Almost all of our tutors are nervous about the first meeting with their student (as are our students). This is quite common and normal. All we ask is that you meet with your student at least once. Remember, we are here to help you every step of the way.

Do I need a background in teaching or a college degree?

No. Most tutors do not have a teaching or educational background. We provide the training, resources and support. All you need is patience, understanding, and a willingness to help.

Do I need to speak my student’s language to teach them English?

No. Language immersion is the best way to learn a new language.

Do I have to pay for any materials for myself or for my student?

No. We provide all the materials through the generosity of our funders and the community. We always accept and appreciate donations.

How soon will I get my student?

You can expect to be matched with a student within ten business days. If it has been more than two weeks and you have not yet been matched, please call the office.

How am I matched?

Generally, you are matched with a student primarily based on their location and time preferences. We try our best to also match students and tutors who have similar interests.

When and where will I meet with my student?

You will always meet with the student in a public place. Most tutors meet at the library. Others meet at churches, restaurants, business, etc. You and your student will agree on a time and location that is convenient for both of you.

The time will vary with each student. It depends on how often you meet, how quickly the student learns, and student practice. Some students take two months while others may take a year to complete a goal. This is not a reflection on you or the student. Goals and their timelines vary depending on each student.

My student wants me to complete personal/business/legal/etc., forms. What do I do?

Depending on the situation, you may serve as an editor. Please call the office before assisting your student with business/legal situations.
