The rewards you will receive for tutoring a student will be unimaginable. Any frustration or uncertainty you may have felt will dissipate when you see the light click on in the student’s eye or when the student tells you s/he received a promotion at work because of improved reading/English skills. A number of students and tutors become close friends. There is no charge to the student for tutoring services and all books are provided at no charge to the student and the tutor. Likewise, there is no fee to attend a prospective tutor training workshop.
We have two types of students:
The typical "literacy" student
This student was born in the U.S. but has difficulty reading.
The ESOL student
This student was born outside the U.S., has moved to the U.S. and wants to learn English. The student may or may not be able to read in his/her native language. The majority of these students are able to communicate in English on a limited basis. A few are unable to communicate in English and a number of other ESOL students simply want to improve their conversational English skills.
One does not have to be a teacher or be able to speak another language to serve either type of student. We provide all the necessary materials that will assist you in serving your student.
Prospective tutors attend a ½ day workshop to learn more about our organization and to learn general tutoring techniques. Our schedule for prospective tutor training workshops:
